Luna Redwood: Travelled Around the Moon
The Story of the Moon Trees
In 1971, Apollo 14 astronaut Stuart Roosa carried hundreds of tree seeds in his personal kit as part of a joint project between NASA and the United States Forest Service. The collection included seeds from redwood, loblolly pine, sycamore, sweetgum and Douglas fir trees. The seeds did not land on the lunar surface, but travelled around the Moon with him before returning to Earth.
After the mission, the seeds were distributed to schools, parks, government buildings and community spaces during the United States Bicentennial celebrations in 1976. They became known as the Moon Trees. The redwood seeds were from the coast redwood, Sequoia sempervirens, one of the tallest and longest-living tree species on Earth. From Ancient Earth to Outer Space
The source story immediately gives us a striking polarity: a tree deeply rooted in the Earth whose seed was carried far beyond it.
Redwoods represent endurance, age, height and extraordinary growth. Their roots hold them firmly within the forest, while their immense trunks reach upwards towards the sky. In Luna Redwood, this earthly rootedness meets the vast, unfamiliar environment of space.
This creates a remedy picture concerned with:
Earth and space
Roots and height
Connection and isolation
Strength and exhaustion
Expansion and separation
Clarity and confusion
Movement and stillness
Time, ageing and timelessness
Separation and Isolation
One of the clearest Luna Redwood themes is a sensation of being separated from the world.
During the proving, this was expressed through sensations such as:
Observing the world through a window
Standing outside oneself
Being surrounded by a membrane
Feeling detached from one’s emotions
Wanting solitude and avoiding company
Watching life from a distance
This can resemble the astronaut’s experience: physically separated from Earth and enclosed within a spacecraft, looking back at the world from a great distance.
Alongside this detachment, there may be a forsaken or isolated feeling—a sense of being alone, disconnected or unable to participate fully in ordinary life.
Height, Growth and Expansion
The natural history of the redwood appears strongly within the remedy.
There may be a desire to feel taller, longer or more expansive, accompanied by stretching. The person may feel elevated, important or “on top of it all”. This can manifest as increased self-confidence and capability, but it may also become haughtiness, arrogance or a desire to manage and direct others.
The enormous stature of the redwood is reflected in themes of:
Height and high places
Ambition and achievement
Wealth and status
Growth and expansion
Confidence and authority
Looking down or observing from above
This expansiveness alternates with exhaustion, weakness and the feeling of being unable to cope.
Clarity and Confusion
Luna Redwood contains a strong mental polarity.
At one extreme, there may be clarity, abundant ideas, inner balance and increased confidence. The person feels capable, calm and mentally light.
At the other, there may be:
Absentmindedness
Difficulty concentrating
Forgetfulness
Thoughts suddenly disappearing
Using incorrect words
Confusing familiar objects or places
A sensation of a veil covering the brain
Awkwardness, fumbling and making mistakes
The mood may shift between cheerfulness and irritability, activity and weakness, confidence and withdrawal.
Time and Ageing
Time is another significant theme. It may feel as though time is moving either too quickly or too slowly.
One proving dream involved time passing rapidly and the dreamer suddenly becoming old. This is particularly interesting in relation to the redwood, a tree capable of living for centuries, and the altered experience of time associated with space travel.
The remedy brings together ancient life, rapid technological progress and the human awareness of mortality.
Irritation, Pressure and the Need for Speed
Luna Redwood may also display pronounced impatience and irritability. Everything must happen quickly and at the person’s own pace.
There can be sensitivity to:
Noise
Crowds
Contradiction
Criticism
Light
Odours
Anger may arise over small matters, sometimes with an impulse to smash objects or lash out. This intensity can alternate with apathy, indifference and a desire to remain in bed observing the world.
Longing for Trees and Movement
A particularly beautiful keynote from the proving is a longing for trees, accompanied by a desire to walk in the forest.
Movement—especially walking quickly—may improve many physical symptoms. There can be restlessness and a need to move, yet also profound fatigue and heaviness.
This longing may express a need to return to the Earth: to reconnect with nature, the body and a sense of belonging after feeling distant or ungrounded.
Dreams and Imagery
The dream world of Luna Redwood is active and vivid. Dreams may involve:
High places and journeys
Space, distance and unfamiliar worlds
War, fighting or being chased
Buildings, churches and royalty
Dead relatives and family
Spiders, insects, wasps and cobwebs
Unsuccessful efforts
Time passing and sudden ageing
Beautiful landscapes
There may also be rapidly changing inner images or the sensation of watching a strange film inside the mind.
Physical Themes
The proving produced a wide range of physical symptoms, with some recurring patterns:
Vertigo and Disorientation
Vertigo may feel as though the walls are moving like fabric or the person is on a ship in a storm. There may be swaying, nausea and fear of falling, with a need to hold onto nearby objects.
Head and Senses
Headaches may occur in the forehead, temples, occiput, vertex or around the eyes. Sensitivity to light, sound and smells can be marked.
Digestion
Digestive symptoms include nausea, abdominal distension after eating, flatulence, cramping, rumbling and changes in appetite. Bending forward, massage, passing stool or lying down may relieve some symptoms.
Muscles and Joints
There may be heaviness, stiffness, tension, cramping and wandering pains in the limbs and joints. A notable general modality is improvement from movement, while sitting still may aggravate aching pains.
Sleep and Energy
Sleep may be restless, with frequent waking, daytime sleepiness or difficulty getting out of bed. Exhaustion alternates with periods of increased activity, clarity and internal lightness.
The Essence of Luna Redwood
At the centre of Luna Redwood is the image of a being removed from its familiar environment.
The seed leaves the Earth, travels through the darkness of space and returns home carrying the memory of that extraordinary journey. It must then germinate, root itself and continue growing.
The remedy appears to explore what happens when we travel too far from our roots—physically, emotionally or spiritually. There may be isolation, detachment and disorientation, but also an opportunity to return with a wider perspective.
Luna Redwood brings together the endurance of an ancient tree and the vulnerability of a tiny seed carried into the unknown. Its themes speak of separation and reconnection, height and rootedness, exhaustion and renewal—and the search for one’s place between Earth and sky.
