The Pineal Gland, DMT & the Homeopathic Remedy

The pineal gland has fascinated physicians, philosophers and spiritual healers for centuries. Sitting deep within the brain, this tiny endocrine gland is best known for producing melatonin, the hormone that helps regulate our circadian rhythm and our relationship with light and darkness.

Yet the pineal has also become associated with something rather more mysterious: DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine), dreaming, altered states of consciousness and the concept of the third eye.

From a homeopathic perspective, the remedy Pineal gland presents an equally fascinating picture. Themes emerging from its proving include insight and knowing, ancient wisdom, healing, spirituality, childhood memories and a striking desire to bring order from chaos.

The Pineal Gland: Light, Darkness & Rhythm

The pineal gland is situated close to the centre of the brain. Its function is the production of melatonin from serotonin. During darkness, melatonin production rises, helping signal that it is nighttime. Light suppresses its production.

This small gland is concerned with rhythm, cycles, light, darkness and our orientation in time.

DMT and the Pineal Gland

DMT is a naturally occurring tryptamine found in a number of plants. DMT is particularly fascinating, when taken as a psychedelic substance, it can produce vivid alterations in consciousness, imagery, perception of time and sense of self.

It is often suggested that the human pineal produces DMT and releases it during dreaming, birth, mystical experiences or death.

Pineal Gland as a Homeopathic Remedy

One of the most characteristic sensations emerging from the proving taken by : Geoff Johnson Homeopath

  • Rocking gently from side to side, like waves.

There is movement and rhythm, but alongside it comes a strong desire for organisation and control.

One of the clearest themes is: "My job or purpose in life is to bring order from chaos."

There can be a feeling of responsibility for keeping things together — of needing to take care of something important, precious or special.

This is counterbalanced by feelings of helplessness and hopelessness.

The person feels they should know what to do, should be able to restore order or perhaps even heal a situation, yet at another level may feel powerless to do so.

Ancient Wisdom, Healing & the Shaman

Some of the most striking imagery from the proving concerns an old, powerful, spiritual or shamanic force.

Themes include:

  • feminine insight and knowing

  • healing, knowledge and love

  • something small yet extremely important

  • old and young

  • old-fashioned or simple people

  • places from childhood

  • an ancient, powerful presence

There is almost a sense of knowledge that is already present rather than something that needs to be learned. This becomes particularly interesting alongside the pineal gland's historical association with intuition and the third eye or the "seat of the soul."

pineal gland

The Pineal gland proving contains rich, almost archetypal imagery:

stone – horns – cliffs – dark red and green – old people – places from childhood.

Within the Pineal remedy we seem to move between old and young, past and present, conscious control and something much older underneath it.

Physical Symptoms

Alongside the symbolic and emotional themes, several physical symptoms appeared prominently in the proving.

The head and eyes were particularly affected:

  • sore eyes and pain behind the eyes

  • bursting headache

  • pain at the vertex

  • continuous, dull head pain

  • heat

Other symptoms included heart pounding and left hip pain.

Bringing Order From Chaos

Perhaps the clearest way of understanding Pineal gland homeopathically is through its central polarity.

On one side we have:

knowledge – insight – healing – purpose – control – importance

On the other:

chaos – helplessness – hopelessness

In the homeopathic proving, we encounter the striking theme of a person whose purpose is to bring order from chaos.

Whether viewed through endocrinology, neuroscience, dreams, symbolism or homeopathic materia medica, this tiny gland occupies a fascinating territory between rhythm and consciousness, darkness and light, the physical and the mysterious.

Homeopathic proving information describes themes and symptoms reported during provings and should not be interpreted as self prescribing the remedy, always see a practitioner
