Mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS) is a complex health issue that involves a number of different systems in your body leading to an array of symptoms. MCAS may develop due to a variety of triggers, including mould, chemicals, toxins, heavy metals, allergens, medications, infections, viruses, food, and alcohol. If you have MCAS, some or all of these triggers can cause your mast cells to release inflammatory mediators, including histamine resulting in unwanted symptoms
MCAS & Hormonal Health: Is Estrogen Dominance Fueling the Fire?
When it comes to Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), conversation often focuses on food triggers, environmental toxins, or stress. Yet one of the most overlooked influences is our hormones — in particularly estrogen.
Many women with MCAS notice symptoms flare at certain points in their menstrual cycle, especially around ovulation or before menstruation. This is no coincidence: estrogen and mast cells are deeply interconnected.
Estrogen, Histamine & Mast Cells
Excess estrogen, or estrogen dominance, isn’t just about the ovaries producing too much. Often, it reflects the body struggling to efficiently break down and excrete estrogen, which allows it to accumulate. But how does this link to MCAS?..
All cells carry receptors — docking sites where chemical messengers, like hormones and histamine, bind and act. Estrogen and histamine both attach to the same receptor (H1). Because of this, high estrogen can stimulate mast cells to release histamine into the bloodstream.

The cycle looks like this:
• Estrogen stimulates mast cells to release histamine.
• Estrogen also downregulates DAO, the enzyme responsible for clearing histamine.
• Histamine then stimulates the ovaries to make more estrogen.
This creates a vicious cycle: estrogen → histamine → estrogen → histamine
(Research here (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/17084457/?utm_source=chatgpt.com), here (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/3088928?utm_source=chatgpt.com), and here (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8147232?utm_source=chatgpt.com)
The result? Increased mast cell activity, heightened MCAS flares, disrupted ovulation, and chaotic hormonal rhythms.
The Calming Role of Progesterone
Progesterone plays the opposite role to estrogen in this story. It:
• Stabilises mast cells.
• Supports DAO production, which helps clear histamine.
• Restores balance within the cycle.
This explains why many women experience symptom shifts across the month — feeling calmer when progesterone is higher, and more reactive when estrogen dominates.

Folliculinum Remedy: The Hormonal Support
In homeopathy we have the remedy Folliculinum prepared from The estrogen contraceptive Pill. It is known for its role in supporting women whose cycles, ovulation, and identity feel out of sync.
Where estrogen dominance drives overstimulation, Folliculinum can help to restore regulation, rhythm, and balance. It addresses not just the physical cycle, but the emotional and creative aspects of a woman’s life.
Themes of Folliculinum //Control & Loss of Self
◦ Controlled or dominated by others, living out someone else’s expectations.
Rescue, Selflessness
◦ The burnout healer
◦ Lack of control over moods, appetite, or body temperature
◦ Over-caring feeling responsible for everyone, the “perfect mother”
◦ Emotional or physical abuse leaving a sense of being drained
◦ Exhaustion, postnatal struggles, or difficulty bonding.
◦ At menopause, the imprint of societal demands for youth, beauty, and perfection can surface as an “internal saboteur.”
◦ Folliculinum helps free women from this patriarchal imprint, restoring identity and inner authority.
◦ Folliculinum reconnects them with their rhythm — hormonally, emotionally, and spiritually.
Folliculinum & MCAS
For women with MCAS, Folliculinum may be especially supportive because it can -
• Helps re-regulate ovulation and cycle balance.
• Supports progesterone’s stabilising effect on mast cells.
• Softens the estrogen–histamine cycle.
• Restores a sense of individuality, preventing the feeling of being “taken over” — by symptoms, by hormones, or by others.
